After obtaining the class Ge 6/6 II locos, RhB would have procured a new series of this well-proven type, but finally opted for a more modern solution: they ordered 10 four-axle tyristor locomotives from SLM and BBC. The locos marked with fleet numbers 611-620 were finished in 1973. Externally they look similar to SBB´s class Re 4/4 II, but technically they are different. The class Re 4/4 II locos are able to feed energy into the catenary while braking, but technology at that time did not allow the joint implementation of thyristor control and regenerative braking. The locomotives of RhB burn the braking energy by using resistors placed on the roof, in favor of the stepless control. In 1982 Rhaetian Railway ordered further 13 units, which entered service in 1984-85. The class Ge 4/4 II are true multi-purpose locomotives and play from express to freight trains a significant role. In double traction they can even haul 400 t trains at a gradient of 35 per thousand.
