Zürich HB - Zurich Main Station
The 6 prototypes of the class RBe 4/4 (nos. 1401-1406) were built in 1959 and 1960. The 64 t heavy and 1988 kW strong electric motor cars had a top speed of 125 km/h. Originally, they have been built for the Gotthard line. Later, 76 more vehicles followed the prototypes, each weighing 4 tons more. The motor cars were modernized in 1992. This increased their weight again with 4 t. It seems, the motor car 1406 somehow escaped the reconstruction...
SBB Cargo rebuilt 26 class Re 4/4 II electric locomotives for the cross-border traffic toward Germany. The modified locos received a new class number: Re 421. SBB Cargo lent the loco Re 421 397 to the passenger traffic division of SBB until the timatable change of 2002. It forwarded regularly the Albert Einstein EuroCity (EC 196/197) between Zurich and Lindau (Germany).
