The class Re 4/4 III is a modified version of the class Re 4/4 II, adapted for the Gotthard line. These locomotives have an increased tractive effort (280 kN instead of 255) due to the modified gear ratio. Therefore they are more suitable to haul freight trains on mountainious lines. Their maximum speed decreased from 14 to 125 km/h. Outwardly, this class differs from the Re 4/4 II only in the locomotive numbers (11350-11370).
