In 2000, MÁV and GYSEV/ROeEE announced a public procurement procedure
for high-power, dual voltage electric locomotives. ADtranz (now
Bombardier Transportation) competed with a passenger-train-, 200 km/h
fast variant of the class 185 locomotives used by Deutsche Bahn. Since
not one locomotive of this kind was built by then, ADtranz brought the
185 001 to Hungary to present to both Hungarian railway companies.
That time ADtranz did not win the tender. MÁV and GYSEV/ROeEE chose
the Eurosprinter locomotive
ES64 U2-V4 by Siemens (class 1047). But in
the recent past, one member of the locomotive family - already called TRAXX
- of the class 185 won MÁV's tender for 25+25 locomotives. Delivery of
the new dual voltage, 160 km/h fast locomotives is expected from 2011
onwards.
