The Lugano-Ponte Tresa Railway was inaugurated in 1912, as third of the narrow gauge railways around Lugano. And this is the only one, which is still in operation. The 12 km long line is from the beginning electrified with 1000 V DC. The regional railway starts ca. 50 m from the SBB-station of Lugano. The train disappears in a tunnel (Galleria Montarina) immediately after departure, and after a short open section, another tunnel follows...

The second tunnel is the 324 m long Galleria Cortivallo. After leaving Sorengo, the train proceeds toward the small lake Lagetto Muzzano, between 2 branches of Lake Lugano.
