Achenseebahn
1000 mm
Jenbach - Seespitz
The 6.76 km long Achenseebahn links the train station of Jenbach to Seespitz port (931 m AMSL) at the southern end of the lake Achensee. The 1000 mm gauge railway reaches its highest point at 970 m in Eben station. The little train climbs 440 m from Jenbach to Eben using a Riggenbach system rack section, with 160 per thousand maximum inclination. The section Jenbach - Seespitz is adhesion operated. On the Achenseebahn circulate only steam trains.
The originally 6.36 km long railway line was inaugurated in 1889, it was extended to the steamboat station in 1916.
The locomotives of the railway were built in 1888-89 in Floridsdorf - they are the world's oldest cog-wheel steam locomotives in service.
For the future they are planning to extend and electrify the line to Pertisau, with a possible further extension to Germany.
